ALBANY, Ga. – Alabama State University used a five-run seventh inning to claim a 14-10 win over Albany State Tuesday at Golden Rams Park.
Senior Marshall Hawkins earned his first win on the season. He went four innings, allowing just two hits and one run. Hawkins stepped in and relieved Eduardo Padilla after he pitched the first inning. It was the first game that Hawkins has given up a hit this spring.
Juniors T.J. Griggs and Ray Pickering led the Hornets' offense, both getting three hits. Griggs drove in four runs and Pickering had three RBIs. Chris Davis had three hits and drove in a run. Freshman Drew Quinney also had a hit.
Alabama State (12-8) broke a scoreless two innings with a homerun by sophomore Darrion Pedro in the top of the third inning. Pedro was 1-for-4 on the day.
Sophomore Ron James reached base on a walk to start the inning and Pickering hit a double to right field advancing James to third. Freshman Brandon Small singled through the left side to score James and Pickering.
Quinney started the fifth-inning hit parade with a double to right field. Eddie Cole (1-for-4) followed with a single, advancing Quinney to third. Cole stole second base; Pedro walked and Davis reached base on error by the pitcher tying the score (4-4). Griggs singled to right field to score Cole. A sacrifice fly to centerfield by James scored Pedro, pushing the Hornets to a 6-4 lead.
Albany State snapped back in the bottom of the sixth, scoring two runs to tie the game 6-6. Alabama State got five of those runs back in the top of the seventh.
Davis singled up the middle, stole second and advanced to third on an error. Washington walked and Griggs doubled to left, scoring Davis and Washington. Griggs advanced to third on a passed ball, while James ground out to second base. Pickering singled to score Griggs. Pickering stole second and freshman Corey Chatman tripled to right field scoring Pickering. Quinney flied out to centerfield to score Chatman and Cole ground out the shortstop, ending the five-run inning for the Hornets.
After the Rams scored one run in the bottom of the seventh, ASU was able to pick up three more runs in the eighth inning. Griggs singled home Davis, who had reached base on error by the shortstop. Griggs stole second; James walked and Pickering singled to right field scoring Griggs and James.
Albany State (20-11) scored three more runs to cut the Hornets' lead to 14-10. ASU's Kyle Norris was able to hold the Rams off and closed the game by striking out Brandon Marcus of Albany.
The Hornets are on the road this weekend, traveling to Jackson, Miss., to battle East Division rival Jackson State with a single game Saturday and a doubleheader Sunday.
