MONTGOMERY – Alabama State University freshman Boshia Richardson tallied a season-best 4 RBI to help the Lady Hornets beat Birmingham Southern Wednesday in a doubleheader at Lagoon Park.
The Lady Hornets (14-25) won 6-5 and 3-1, snapping a two-game losing streak and breaking an eight-game winning streak for Birmingham Southern (29-5).
Birmingham Southern scored five runs in the first inning as the Panthers bunched together three singles, a walk and a homerun.
The Lady Hornets answered in their first at-bat as Ayesha Famble singled to right field and scored on a base hit by Quaniesha Limbrick. Courtney Crossley reached first on an error and Quayanna Forte' singled down the right field line to load the bases for Richardson, who slapped a grand slam to tie the game 5-5.
In the bottom of the fifth, Richardson doubled to right field to score Limbrick and give ASU a 6-5 lead.
Game two was scoreless until the sixth inning when the Panthers opened up with a 1-0 lead. Alabama State tied the game when Forte' hit her first homerun of the season.
After Birmingham Southern was retired in order in the sixth, the Lady Hornets added two more runs to claim the 3-1 win.
Wednesday's game ended Alabama States regular season play before heading to the SWAC Championship April 23-25 in Alexandria, La.
