Montgomery – The Alabama State University Lady Hornets swept a three-game series against intrastate rival Alabama A&M over the weekend, winning 10-2, 7-5 and 8-4.
ASU opened the first game on Friday evening with an eight-run second inning. During the scoring burst, the Lady Hornets collected base hits by Courtney Crossley, Akesia Cloud, Quayanna Forte' and Mikal Knox and a double by Quaniesha Limbrick and took advantage of two A&M errors. ASU sent 11 batters to the plate in the inning.
A&M never threatened after that and the Lady Hornets added two more runs in the bottom of the fifth to close out a 10-2 win.
On Saturday, the Lady Hornets swept both games of a doubleheader.
ASU had to come from behind to win the opener, 7-5. A&M had a 5-1 lead before the Lady Hornets rallied for five runs in the bottom of the fourth.
Base hits by Boshia Richardson, Ariel Gainey and Tiffany Wells loaded the bases. Ayesha Famble drew a walk to score Richardson and then Gainey scored on a pass ball. Cloud reached first on a bunt to load the bases again. Crossley drove home two runs with a single up the middle and Forte' plated the last run with a base hit.
The Lady Hornets scored one more time in the sixth inning.
In the final game of the series, Alabama A&M jumped out to a 2-1 lead in the first inning and went back on top 4-3 in the top of the third before ASU rebounded for an 8-4 win.
The Lady Hornets got four home runs in the game – two from Richardson and one each from Wells and Limbrick.
The Lady Hornets are off until this weekend when they host the Braves of Alcorn State University on Friday and Saturday, April 10-11, at Fain Park. The first pitch is set for 6 p.m. on Friday and 1 p.m. on Saturday.
