Hornets downed by UAB, 16-6

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Alabama State University baseball team dropped a 16-6 decision to in-state foe UAB Tuesday night at Young Memorial Field.

Drew Quinney, Draveon Moreland and Jorrell Fredericks each collected two RBI for the Hornets (5-8) who were unable to overcome a pair of big innings for the Blazers (14-8).

UAB plated 10 runs in the third inning and then added five in the seventh to secure the midweek victory. Jonathan Merritt led the way for the Blazers going 2-for-2 with two RBI and a pair of runs scored on the night.

The Hornets scored their first runs in the sixth inning on a two-run single by Quinney and then added four runs in their final at-bat thanks to Moreland's two-run single and Fredericks two-run double.

Trent Popp worked 3.1 scoreless innings of relief for the Hornets while limiting the UAB offense through the middle innings of the game.

Alabama State returns to action this weekend with a three-game SWAC series against rival Alabama A&M. ASU-AAMU open their series with a single game Friday at Noon followed by Saturday's doubleheader also at Noon with all games scheduled for Patterson Field.
