MONTGOMERY, Ala. -- The Alabama State softball team fell to Mercer in doubleheader action 6-2 and 5-1 Wednesday evening at Fain Park.
Mercer improved to 11-6 on the season with the sweep while ASU slipped to 2-11.
During the opening game, neither team could put a run on the board until the Bears tallied three unearned runs in the top of the third inning.
Stacey Condra reached base on an error and then scored when Brandy Keeter also got aboard via an ASU miscue. Holly Oglesbee then doubled into left field scoring Keeter. The third Lady Hornet error of the frame allowed Allison Jones to reach base and advanced Oglesbee to third. Sara Stukes closed the Mercer scoring surge with an RBI single to left.
Mercer added three runs to their lead in the fifth after stringing together four singles.
Alabama State finally got a piece of the action in the bottom of the fifth scoring two runs.
Courtney Crossley was hit by a pitch and then scored on an RBI single by Whitley Golson. After
Ayesha Famble drew a walk, Sosefina Toilolo drove in the Lady Hornets final run with a single down the third base line.
Two more scoreless innings ended the first game in favor of the Bears 6-2.
Game two saw Mercer grab an early advantage with two unearned runs in the first inning. Two singles along with a Lady Hornet error accounted for the Bears scoring production.
Mercer extended its lead to 3-0 with a run in the fourth and added a pair of runs in the final inning. The Lady Hornets avoided the shutout as Famble singled home Arield Gainey in the bottom of the seventh.
Alabama State returns to action this weekend at the Auburn Invitational March 5-7, in Auburn, Ala.
