JSU Baseball Takes Series Opener with ASU, 19-4

MONTGOMERY, Ala.
– The Alabama State baseball team fell behind early in a disappointing 19-4 loss to Jackson State Saturday evening at Paterson Field.
 
The series opening loss snapped a four-game win streak for the Hornets (9-9, 4-5 SWAC). The Tigers improved to 15-11 overall and 6-3 in conference play.

Jackson State finished with 18 hits and saw seven different players record multi-hit performances. Chad Hall went 4-for-5 in leading JSU at the plate while Trae Rutland finished 3-for-5 with four RBI and three runs scored.

Nykellan Isaac had a pair of hits to pace a Hornet offense that collected just five hits on the day.

After scoring a pair of runs in the second inning to take the early lead, JSU added five runs in the third using five hits and capitalizing on three ASU errors in the frame.

The Tigers tacked on another run in the fifth, before the Hornets finally got on the board with three runs in the bottom of the inning. Ron James tallied a two-out two-run single and Lloyd Kelly drove in the third run after reaching on an error by the JSU right fielder.

Jackson State answered with four runs in the sixth and then put the game away with a seven-run seventh inning performance that included seven hits.

Kelly recorded an RBI double in the bottom of the seventh to complete the scoring for the game.

Quintavious Drains earned the win on the mound for JSU after allowing five hits and three earned runs in seven innings of work. Drains struck out six and surrendered five walks. Anthony Ricciardi took the loss for ASU allowing 12 runs on 14 hits while striking out five.

ASU and JSU close their series with a doubleheader Sunday at Paterson Field starting at Noon.
