MONTGOMERY, Ala.
– The Alabama State baseball team split a Southwestern Athletic Conference doubleheader against Jackson State Sunday at Paterson Field dropping the first game 15-0 before rallying for a 6-5 victory in the second contest.

The Tigers took two of three games over the weekend to improve to 15-12 (7-4 SWAC) while the Hornets dropped to 10-10 (5-6) after closing their seven-game homestand.

Jackson State dominated play in Sunday's opener getting both strong pitching and a solid offensive performance. Cortney Nelson hurled a complete game shutout for the Tigers scattering four hits over seven innings of work while striking out four.

JSU also pounded out 15 runs on 14 hits with Willie Wesley going 4-for-6 with five RBI in leading the offensive explosion.

In game two, Alabama State rallied with five runs in the sixth inning to salvage the doubleheader split and earn an important conference victory.

ASU trailed 4-0 in the fifth before tallying its first run of the day. Kejuan Riley scored after singling and moving to third in front of a sacrifice fly by Nykellan Isaac.

After JSU pushed its lead to 5-1 in the top of the sixth, the Hornets exploded for five runs in the bottom of the frame to take a lead they would not give back. Ron James led the inning off with a double and scored on a double by Jourdan Mott, who came around to score following an error by the pitcher on a ball hit by Reginald Mitchell. Back-to-back walks loaded the bases for ASU setting up Isaac for a two-out RBI single. Bama State added two more runs as a pair of batters were hit by pitches.

Alabama State starting pitcher Drew Quinney and reliever Devin Dominguez combined to shutout the Tigers over the final three innings to secure the victory. Quinney worked eight innings allowing 11 hits while striking out seven. Dominguez pitched a perfect ninth in earning his second save of the year.

James and Riley each collected two hits in the nightcap to lead the Hornet offense. Frank Solis was JSU's top performer at the plate going 3-for-5.

ASU visits Florida A&M Wednesday afternoon before returning home for a three-game set against Savannah State on Apr. 17-18.
