MONTGOMERY, Ala. – The Alabama State baseball team suffered a pair of disappointing losses to Savannah State over the weekend falling 7-3 and 18-5 in games played at Paterson Field.
ASU slips to 10-13 overall following the losses while Savannah State moved to 20-17 with the two road victories.
In Saturday's series opener, the two squads battled through four scoreless innings before the Tigers struck for two runs in the fifth. Bama State got on the board in the sixth plating a pair of runs to knot the score at 2-2. Ron James led off the frame with a homerun followed by a single from
Drew Quinney and a double by Josue Quinones. Quinney then raced home on a sacrifice fly by Jourdan Mott.
SSU regained the lead with three runs in the eighth before adding a pair of insurance runs in the ninth. The Hornets were able to tack on a final run in the eighth following an run-scoring single by Mott.
Alabama State starting pitcher Anthony Ricciardi allowed nine hits and five runs in seven innings of work and
Corey Washington pitched the final two innings for the Hornets. Eric Ransom earned the win for the Tigers after scattering nine hits over six innings.
Quinney went a perfect 4-for-4 at the plate to pace Bama State while five different Savannah State players posted two hits in the game.
On Sunday, Savannah State pounded out 18 runs on 18 hits as six players produced multi-hit performances. Blake Lee and Dexter Kelley led the way for SSU with four hits each. Kelley finished the game 4-for-5 with six RBI.
ASU got a strong offensive showing from its top four hitters in the lineup as the quartet combined to account for nine of the team's 12 hits on the day. Mott led the group going 3-for-4 with five RBI while James,
Jordan Mims and Kejuan Riley all added two hits each.
Savannah State grabbed an early lead with three runs in the top of the first. The Hornets cut into the deficit in their first at-bat getting a run on an RBI-single by Mott.
The Tigers extended their advantage to 14-1 after getting five runs in the third, two in the fourth and four more in the sixth. Bama State battled back with three runs in the bottom of the sixth. After a double by Riley and a James' single, Mott belted a bases-clearing homer. Mott struck again in the seventh driving home Riley with an RBI-single to left for ASU's final score of the game.
SSU closed the scoring with four runs in the eighth to reach the final margin.
Alabama State gets a week off from competition before hosting Mississippi Valley State on Apr. 24-25 in a pair of key SWAC doubleheaders.
