MONTGOMERY, Ala. – The Alabama State baseball team suffered a pair of hard fought losses to Mississippi Valley State Sunday at Paterson Field falling 10-3 and 11-6.
With the losses ASU drops to 10-15 overall and 5-7 in Southwestern Athletic Conference action, while Mississippi Valley improved to 19-20, 12-4 (SWAC).
In the opening game, MVSU pounded out 15 hits and scored in five of nine innings en route to the win. ASU struggled to get anything going on offense as a trio of Delta Devil hurlers limited the Hornets to just five hits and struck out nine batters.
Bama State held the early lead getting a run in the bottom of the first when
Jordan Mims scampered home on a wild pitch after reaching base on a walk and moving to third on a double by Ron James.
Valley evened the score with a run in the second and earned its first lead with another solo run in the fourth. MVSU tacked on two runs in the fifth opening up a 4-1 advantage. ASU answered with a run in the bottom of the fifth when
Lloyd Kelly led off the frame with a homer.
The Delta Devils added two more runs in the sixth before the Hornets tallied their final run of the game in their half of the inning when
Drew Quinney drove in Jourdan Mott with an RBI-double down the leftfield line.
MVSU put the game out of reach in the seventh after scoring four runs for the final margin of victory.
In game two, Alabama State outhit Mississippi Valley 15-13 but a pair of big innings proved to be the difference in the game. Quinney and Quentin Johnson led the hit parade for ASU finishing with three hits each while Kejuan Riley, Reginald Mitchell and Mims each collected two hits in the contest.
Each team scored a run in the first. The Hornets used three singles from Riley, Draveon Moreland and Quinney to notch their first score. ASU went up 2-1 in the third as Ron James doubled then scored on a two-out double by Quinney, and then extended its advantage to 3-1 with another run in the fourth when Quinney drew a bases loaded walk.
The first of Valley's two high scoring frames occurred in the fifth as the Delta Devils plated five runs to grab a 6-5 lead. After a scoreless sixth, MVSU widened its lead with four more runs in the seventh.
Bama State collected its final run of the game in the eighth following doubles from Quinney and Mitchell. MVSU closed the scoring with a final run in the ninth.
ASU and MVSU conclude their SWAC series Monday at Paterson Field with first pitch set for 1 p.m.
