MONTGOMERY, Ala. –Mississippi Valley State rallied for a 16-9 baseball victory over Alabama State in the series finale between the pair Monday afternoon at Paterson Field.
ASU slips to 10-16 overall and 5-11 in Southwestern Athletic Conference action following the loss while Mississippi Valley improves to 20-20 and 13-4 (SWAC).
An 11-run explosion in the seventh inning was the difference in the contest as MVSU capitalized on five Bama State miscues and collected five hits in the game-changing frame.
Lloyd Kelly went 5-for-5 with four RBI in leading the Hornets to a 15-12 advantage in hits, while teammates
Drew Quinney and Jourdan Mott each posted three hits in the game. A trio of Valley batters tallied two hits each in the victory.
Bama State strung together four hits in taking an early lead with two runs in the second inning. MVSU answered with three runs in the top of the third to gain their first lead, 3-2.
The two squads traded a run in the fourth with
Jorrell Fredericks triple driving in the score for ASU. The Hornets retook the lead in the fifth after plating a pair of runs.
Jordan Mims led off with a double and then scored on a double by Kelly. Quinney then drove in Kelly with a single to right.
The Delta Devils broke things open in the seventh sending 14 batters to the plate in an 11-run production that pushed MVSU in front 15-5.
The Hornets attempted to battle back scoring a pair of runs in both the seventh and eighth innings but it was not enough to overcome the double-digit output.
Valley closed the scoring with a run in the ninth to secure the final margin.
Alabama State next visits Georgia State Wednesday for its final midweek game of the season before closing out the home portion of its 2010 schedule this weekend against Alcorn State University.
