Hornets Take Doubleheader and Earn Series Sweep of Alabama A&M

MONTGOMERY, Ala.
– Alabama State completed the series sweep over rival Alabama A&M following a pair of wins in Saturday's doubleheader at Paterson Field. ASU took game one 8-6 before earning an 11-4 victory in the finale.
 
The Hornets (8-8, 4-4 SWAC) pounded out 13 hits and scored runs in each of the final four innings en route to their 8-6 victory over the Bulldogs (12-17, 1-9 SWAC) in Saturday's opener.

Isaac Nykellan went 3-for-4 and scored a run to lead the Hornetswhile Jordan Mims and Jorrell Fredericks each finished with two hits in the contest. Eight of ASU's nine starters recorded a hit in the game one victory.

LaDale Hayes was A&M's top offensive performer going 2-for-4 with two runs scored.

On the mound, Trent Popp earned the victory for ASU after allowing four hits and just two runs in six innings of work. Devin Dominguez worked the final three innings for the Hornets. Chris Hernandez suffered the loss for the Bulldogs giving up five runs and five walks in 5.1 innings.

The Hornets got on the board first with a run in the third. Following a pair of walks, Mims singled up the middle sending a run across the plate. Alabama A&M tied the score with a run in the top of the fourth.

In the fifth, ASU scored a pair of runs to start a string of four straight innings in which they scored. J Mott collected a bases loaded hit to drive in the runs during the fifth.

The Bulldogs rallied for the lead in the top of the sixth scoring three runs for a 4-3 advantage. However, a wild pitch and an RBI-single for Motts allowed the Hornets to regain the lead, 5-4, for good. ASU a run in the seventh and two more insurance runs in the eighth that proved to be the difference as A&M attempted a ninth inning comeback with two runs in their final at-bat.

Game two saw the squads each tally a first inning score. Alabama A&M added a pair of runs in the top of the third, but Bama State answered with three runs in the bottom of the frame to grab a lead it would not relinquish. Single runs in the both the fourth and fifth innings gave the Hornets a 6-3 advantage and then a five-run eighth secured the win.

Corey Washington struck out seven and allowed just two hits in pitching ASU's second complete game of the weekend.

At the plate, Nykellan, Ron James and Adrian Snell each recorded two hits for the Hornets. Both of James' hits were homeruns with a two-run blast in the third and a solo shot to lead off the fifth. Mims had one hit but scored three runs and also drove in four in helping ASU to the series sweep.

Alabama State continues its current home stand Wednesday at 1 p.m. against Florida A&M before welcoming Jackson State for a three-game set on Apr. 10-11.
