MONTGOMERY, Ala. – A trio of Alabama State pitchers collected 10 strikeouts and allowed just two runs in leading the Hornets to a 7-2 victory over Florida A&M Wednesday afternoon at Paterson Field.
The win marked the fourth in a row for the Hornets (9-8) and was their fifth in the last six games. With the loss, FAMU falls to 6-17-1 on the year.
Drew Quinney started on the mound for ASU working five scoreless innings with five strikeouts to earn the victory. Devin Dominiguez picked up the save after allowing just one hit in 3.2 innings of relief that also featured five strikeouts.
At the plate, Bama State pounded out eight hits including two-hit performances from both Quinney and Kejuan Riley. Riley and
Jordan Mims each finished with a pair of RBI.
Alabama State struck first plating a pair of runs in the second inning. After
Lloyd Kelly was hit by a pitch to lead off the frame, Quinney moved him to third with a double. Reginald Mitchell recorded an RBI-groundout and Adrian Snell drove in the second run on a fielder's choice to short.
The Hornets made it 3-0 in the fifth following a sacrifice fly by Jourdan Mott.
FAMU (6-17-1) got on the board with a pair of runs in the sixth off of ASU reliever Mitchell Smith. The Rattlers tallied their first run with a successful double-steal of second and home by Scot Sheplak and Derrick Shaw. Justin Abney then followed with an RBI-double down the leftfield line that ended Smith's outing and brought in Dominguez from the bullpen for ASU.
Bama State tacked on four runs in the bottom of the seventh for the final margin. ASU recorded five hits in the scoring spree including a two-run double for Riley.
Shaw went 2-for-4 for Florida A&M as the lone Rattler to record multiple hits in the contest. Kelvin Hale suffered the loss for FAMU after allowing six runs on four hits in six innings of work.
Alabama State concludes its current home stand this weekend with a three-game series against SWAC rival Jackson State at Paterson Field. ASU-JSU will play a doubleheader starting at 1 p.m. Saturday followed by a single game Sunday at 1 p.m.
