The Hornets, playing in their final regular season contests, finished the season 12-26 overall and 6-20 in the SWAC while MVSU improved to 23-26 and 17-8. The victory allowed the Devils to earn the Eastern Division #2 seed in the upcoming SWAC tournament with ASU already holding the East #4 seed.
Bama State and Valley will be on the same side of the SWAC Tournament bracket. ASU opens tournament play on May 26 at 6 p.m. against Western Division champion Texas Southern while MVSU faces West #3 Grambling State in the tournament opener at Noon that day.
Game 1 - ASU 0, MVSU 10
ASU never got a chance to get rolling as Valley jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the first inning. Errors were costly for the Hornets as a pair of miscues led to three of the five runs in the opening frame.
MVSU scored another run in the second inning and then tacked on four in the fifth to force a conclusion to the opening game. The Delta Devils shut out the Hornets but Nykellan Issac and
Drew Quinney were both able to collect two hits each in the game.
ASU's
Devin Dominquez, who is usually a closer, started and took the loss after allowing 10 runs on 11 hits while striking out three in four innings of work.
Game 2 - ASU 7, MVSU 6
Alabama State scored four of its seven runs in the top of the first inning to grab the early momentum.
Quentin Johnson walked to get things going and then stole second before moving to third when Quinney reached base on a fielding error by the MVSU second baseman. The Hornets later loaded the bases for designated hitter Jourdan Mott, who drilled a run-scoring single into left field. Issac drew a walk to force in ASU's second score of the game. With the bases still loaded Draveon Moreland's grounder to second allowed another run to score and a wild pitch plated the Hornets' final run of the frame.
ASU scored three more times before MVSU rallied with four runs in the sixth and seventh innings to pull within one.
Jordan Mims relieved
Corey Washington on the mound and battled out of two potential runs with the support of a nifty play at home by Moreland before closing the door with a final strike out.
Moreland had one hit and two RBIs while Johnson, Quinney, Mott and Issac each drove in a run in the ASU victory.
