SHREVEPORT, La. -- In a rematch of their SWAC Tournament opener, the Alabama State University baseball team dropped a tough hard-fought 3-2 decision to Texas Southern Friday afternoon in an elimination game at Fairgrounds Field.
The Hornets fell behind early and attempted a late comeback coming up just short against the Western Division champion Tigers.
ASU outhit TSU, 8-7, for the game and got a stellar complete game pitching performance from
Corey Washington but the Tigers capitalized on timely hits in advancing to a semifinal game against Grambling State.
Washington scattered seven hits over nine innings and allowed just three runs. He struck out five but issued seven walks.
At the plate,
Jordan Mims,
Lloyd Kelly and Ron James each collected two hits. James drove in both of the Hornets runs in the contest.
Texas Southern scored a run in the second and two more in the fourth in building a 3-0 lead. ASU got on the board in the fifth when James singled home Mims, who led off the frame with a double.
James struck again in the seventh belting a solo homerun to close the gap to 3-2, but that would mark the end of the ASU rally.
The loss closes the Alabama State 2010 season with the Hornets finishing the year at 13-28.
