Hornets Drop Series Finale at Alabama A&M, 5-4

Final Boxscore

NORMAL, Ala.
– Alabama A&M scored the game-winning run in the eighth inning taking the series finale against Alabama State 5-4 Saturday afternoon at Bulldog Field.

ASU slips to 11-22 overall and 6-13 in the Southwestern Athletic Conference after dropping the rubber game of the series with their in-state rivals.

The Bulldogs seized the early lead after scoring a pair of runs in the first inning off of ASU starting pitcher Nick Andrews. After the rough start, Andrews settled down allowing just one more run over five innings of work while also collecting seven strikeouts.

Bama State scored twice in the fourth inning knotting the score at 2-2. Jourdan Mott led the frame off with a solo homerun and Nykellan Isaac raced home on a wild pitch to account for the two scores.

A&M answered with a run in the bottom half of the inning to regain the lead and then added another run in the sixth for a 4-2 advantage.

The Hornets rallied to again even the score plating a pair of runs in the seventh. Drew Quinney tallied an RBI-single and Reginald Mitchell drew a bases loaded walk to force home the tying run. Unfortunately, a throwing error and a passed ball allowed the Bulldogs to tally the winning run in the eighth.

ASU struggled at the plate finishing with just five hits and leaving 13 runners on base as A&M starter Phillip Guthrie walked four, hit five batters and committed a balk during his six innings on the hill. Guthrie also collected six of the Bulldogs 11 strikeouts on the day.

Alabama State will have the week off before closing the regular season next weekend with a three-game set at Jackson State. The ASU-JSU series opens Friday, May 14 at 6 p.m.
