ASU falls to Prairie View 1-0

MONTGOMERY, Ala.Despite being peppered with shots throughout the match, Alabama State's freshman goalkeeper Kylee Hathaway stood strong against Prairie View. But in the 24th minute, she could not stop a punch in off the foot of Angie Guillory to give the Lady Panthers a 1-0 victory over the Lady Hornets Saturday afternoon at Hornets Stadium.

“The ladies play well I thought,” said ASU's head coach Jodie Smith. “The tempo was good and we had great defensive efforts, but we just had one mishap that cost us the game in the first period.”

ASU (2-16-1) had trouble sustaining an offensive attack, getting just three shots on goal –  two in the first period and one in the second. Prairie View (3-16-1), despite allowing some odd-man rushes from Alabama State, was generally able to keep extra defenders back to thwart most of the Lady Hornet's threats.

Hathaway had four saves, while senior forward Jasmine Wilson, sophomore defender Stephanie Howard, and freshmen forward Kyla Neale all had one shot on goal each.

ASU will travel to Alexandria, La., Wednesday, November 3, 2011 to compete in the Southwestern Athletic Conference tournament. The Lady Hornets will face the University of Arkansas Pine-Bluff in the tournament's opening round.
