Hornets Run Into Hot Shooting St. Louis

Box Score Final Box

ST. LOUIS, Mo.—Cody Ellis and Rob Loe each scored 15 points to lead St. Louis University to a 65-35 win over Alabama State University in men's collegiate basketball action.

It was a game which saw the Billikens (10-1) control the game in every facet.  Not only did they shoot the ball well, they were able to use their dominating height to control the boards as they out rebounded the Hornets 45-24.

SLU shot well over 50 percent until the final few minutes of the game when the Billikens emptied their bench and played all of their subs.

“We could not get a shot to fall in the first half,” head coach Lewis Jackson said.  “Both teams got 24 attempts in the first half and they hit 12 of theirs and we only made four and they just got off to a great start.  They shot it well and we couldn't throw it in the ocean.”

“They were so much bigger than us around the basket they dominated the glass on us.  Our guys played hard.  We were out manned at just about every position and when you play good teams like SLU you have these types of nights.  But I though our guys fought hard and we just couldn't generate any points.

SLU did cool off and finished the game at 49 percent shooting from the field, but they connected on nine of their 19 three point attempts and hit 12 of 19 from the free throw line.

Kenderek Washington led the Hornets (2-7) with 12 points and Josh Mason came off the bench to score eight.  The big problem for ASU was the inability of Ivory White and Tramaine Butler to score.  White missed all three of his attempts and Butler missed four.

SLU jumped out to a 33-11 lead by halftime led by Ellis' 12 points and Loe's nine.  SLU shot 50 percent from the field (12-24) and hit five of their 11 three point attempts.  The taller Billikens were also able to use their size in out rebounding ASU 22-12 and blocked four shots.

The first half for ASU was the beginning of a tough game offensively as ASU only hit four of their 24 first half field goals (17 percent).  In fact, ASU's first basket of the game did not come until the 11:55 mark when Luther Page got ASU on the scoreboard.  By then SLU had already scored 17 points.

ASU finished the game shooting 29 percent (14-48) from the field and only hit one of their 12 three point attempts.  ASU got to the free throw line nine times and hit six of those.

ASU will continue their road trip at Clemson on Monday when they face the Tigers at 6 p.m. CT.
