MIAMI, Fla.—
Kenderek Washington scored 19 points and
Ivory White added 10 to lead Alabama State to a 60-57 win at Florida International giving the Hornets their first win of the season.
With ASU trailing 29-21 at halftime, the Hornets came out in the second half and outscored FIU 10-2 to even the score at 31 on a basket from
Tramaine Butler at the 15:43 mark. ASU would go on to take their first lead at 37-35 on a put-back basket from
Stephawn Brown at the 11:15 mark and the Hornets would never trail again, even though there would be a few ties before the game was finished.
From there ASU would go on to build their largest lead at 48-40 with 7:38 left in the game on a two-point basket from White, but the home-standing Panthers would not go away.
FIU would go on a 11-3 run over the next four minutes to even the score at 51 on a three point basket from Jeremy Allen. The two teams would be tied at 53 and 55 before Washington hit a three point basket with 42 seconds left to give ASU a 58-55 lead.
After Dominique Ferguson hit a basket with 21 seconds left, he had a chance to even the score as he was fouled on the play, but White was able to rebound the missed shot and was fouled with 19 seconds left. He made the two free throws for the final three point margin.
FIU had two chances to even the score in the final hectic seconds but Phil Taylor and Allen both missed three's as ASU held on for the win.
“It wasn't pretty, but we managed to hold on after we came out and played a better second half,” head coach
Lewis Jackson said. “The first half we just came out and went through the motions, but the second half we came out and played with some emotion, some confidence and we got some shots to fall.”
The Hornets had their best shooting half of the season in the second half knocking down 56 percent (14-25) of their field goals and that includes hitting six of their 11 three point attempts.
“Everyone was trying to run down the court and be the hero and we were trying to call plays from the sideline trying to get the guys into a rhythm based on what we see,” Jackson said. “Once we were able to get the plays called based on what we saw, we were able to get good shots and come out with the win.”
Jeremy Wright led FIU with a game-high 26 points while Ferguson had a game-high 11 rebounds.
In the first half Wright scored 14 of his points to lead FIU to the eight-point halftime lead. The two big reasons FIU had the lead was the fact they out rebounded the Hornets 25-12 in the first stanza and ASU only shot 27 percent from the field while the Panthers were able to shoot 48 percent.
Washington kept ASU in the game in the first half with 11 of his points, while all of White's points came in the second half as he picked up two quick fouls and missed the majority of the opening stanza. Butler also scored nine points with all of those coming in the second half.
The Hornets did a good job of taking care of the basketball, committing a season-low 12 turnovers and forcing 19.
The Hornets move to 1-5 on the season and FIU fell to 2-5. The Hornets are off until Friday, Dec. 10, when they play Stephen F. Austin in the first game of the Lumberjack E-Tech Classic hosted by S.F. Austin in Nacogdoches, Texas. That game is scheduled to begin at 4:15 p.m.
