HATTIESBURG, MS -- The Alabama State University softball team came up short against the Prairie View Panthers in the first day of the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) round-up, 5-4 at Tatum Field softball complex on Friday evening.
The Lady Hornets (3-16, 0-1 SWAC) got on the board first in the bottom of the first inning, as Ayesha Famble tripled down left field, while Brittnei Price singled up the middle driving in Famble to give ASU a 1-0 lead.
Alabama State continued swinging the sticks in the bottom of the second inning with a line drive down right field by Mercedes Frazier. The Lady Hornets scored two runs off of PVAMU errors scoring Frazier. Brehanna Rodrigues singled down the right field line hoisting two runners over home plate opening the lead 4-0.
Both teams went scoreless over the next two innings, until the Panthers scored three runs in the top of the fifth inning off of miscues by Alabama State.
Prairie View struck again in the top of the sixth, driving in two more runs for the final margin.
Alabama State continues the round up Saturday against Texas Southern (10 a.m.) and Southern at 12:30 p.m.
