ASU Softball Wins Third Straight

Wetumpka, Ala. - The Alabama State (6-18) softball team scored five runs in the fifth inning to put away Alcorn State (10-13) 16-10.  It was the first of a three game series played at the Wetumpka Sports Complex.

Akesia Cloud led the way for the lady Hornets going 3-3 at the plate with two runs scored, 6 RBI and a Homerun.  Ayesha Famble also had a solid day for ASU.  She was 3-5, scored twice and brought in two runners.

Stephanie Hernandez pitched the entire way for ASU.  She allowed 10 runs off of 14 Alcorn hits along with one strikeout.

The lady Braves scored first when Jasmine Hall hit a double that scored Shawna Bruton.  The Lady Hornets responded in the bottom of the first scoring four runs of their own while taking a commanding 4-1 lead into the second.

Between the third and fifth inning, Alcorn would score eight runs to lead ASU 9-7 to start the bottom half of the fifth inning.  ASU would push across those five runs led by a solo homerun from Megan Dixon to lead off the inning and a three-run homerun from Cloud to give ASU a lead it would never relinquish.

Deanna Rancilio picked up the loss for Alcorn.  She falls to 7-5 on the season.  Kala Purry had the best day at the plate for the lady Braves.  Purry was 3-4 with a homerun, two runs scored, and a pair of RBI.

Alabama State and Alcorn State will play a double-header at the Wetumpka Sports Complex Saturday.  The first pitch has been moved up to 11:00 am due to possible rain being in the area.
