Alabama State Heads to SWAC Softball Tournament

MONTGOMERY, Ala. – The Alabama State softball team starts post season play Thursday in Irondale, Ala. for the Southwestern Athletic Conference Softball Tournament.  The four day event is a double elimination tournament that runs from May 5th-8th.

Alabama State (10-31) holds the third seed on the Eastern side of the bracket.  They will challenge second seeded and western division opponent Southern University (18-22) in first round action.

ASU enters the league's tournament after wraping up a series victory over Alabama A&M to conclude the regular season.  Both wins were needed in order for the Lady Hornets to qualify for post season play.  The Lady Jaguars are riding a nine game winning streak.

“We have had plenty of rest going into the tournament.” Head coach Telma O'Neal-Hall stated.  We are also looking to take some of the momentum that we ended the regular season with into the post season.”

Southern defeated ASU 8-6 earlier in the season at the SWAC roundup in Hattiesburg, Miss.  In that game, the Lady Hornets had four players with at least two hits, including Brehanna Rodrigues who is currently fourth in the conference in overall statistics.  Rodrigues is batting .426 on the season.   Ayesha Famble leads the team with seven homeruns.

First pitch from the Shea Brothers Complex is set for 11:30 am.
