ASU Softball Eliminated From SWAC Tournament
Irondale, Ala. – Big scoring innings in the second and the third for Southern University ended Alabama State University's season in softball by a final of 9-1 at the Southwestern Athletic Conference Tournament in Irondale, Ala Saturday afternoon.
ASU (11-33) got on the scoreboard first with a two out triple from Mercedes Frazier that scored Meagan Dixon and the Lady Hornets led 1-0 after the first inning. ASU could not manufacture anything else offensively from that point on.
In the bottom half of the second inning, the Lady Jaguars (20-23) took the lead 4-1 when Audrey Phillips hit a three run homerun. Six more runs were scored by SU in the bottom of the third inning extending the lead to 7-1.
A pair of homers from Victoria Stewart and Shabanese Brown rounded out the scoring for the Lady Jaguars ending the game on the mercy rule.
“We were a very young team this season.” Head coach Telma Oneal-Hall stated. We grew up late in the season and I am proud as to how hard our team fought.” Coach Oneal-Hall said. It was the final game for senior Akesia Cloud who drove in the game winning run Friday against Grambling State
Frazier led the way for ASU going 1-2 with an RBI. Whitley Golson was also 1-2.
