Hornets Prepare for UAPB

MONTGOMERY—The Alabama State University (5-10/2-1) men's basketball team will look to get back into the win column Monday, Jan. 9, when they host the University of Arkansas-Pine Bluff (1-13/0-2) at 7:30 p.m. in the Dunn-Oliver Acadome.

It has been a long week for the Hornets who are playing their fourth game in seven days, winning the first two games on the road.  That final road win was a triple overtime winner at Jackson State University.  Even though the win was a good one, the effects of that game showed in the second half of ASU's loss to Mississippi Valley State on Saturday night when they were only able to shoot 27 percent from the field in the seven-point loss.

“These guys are thick-skinned and they came out and gave an effort and was upbeat in today's practice,” head coach Lewis Jackson said.  “They know we had an opportunity to win the ball game last night and did not get it done.  They are excited to get into another game on Monday.”

With a week full of games, the coaching staff returned to the practice court today to prepare for the fourth game of the week.  It was a practice where the team worked on getting better, but had to be careful so they could continue to stay fresh for tomorrow's game.

“We came in today and watched tape of the games and get a look at what Pine Bluff does offensively and on defense,” Jackson said.  “We worked on our offense some and went over some things on defense, but did not do a whole lot to put a extra wear and tear on the legs and just worked in the half court.”

The game will feature seven of the top 26 scorers in the Southwestern Athletic Conference led by UAPB's Savalace Townsend, who leads the conference in scoring at 16.5 points per game.  ASU's Kenderek Washington is fourth in the conference at 14.5 points per game.

Other top scorers for ASU are Tramaine Butler (11.6) in eighth and Ivory White (9.7) in 15th.  UAPB's other scorers are Daniel Broughton (9.9) 13th, Mitchell Anderson (9.7) 18th and Lazabian Jackson (8.2) coming in 26th.

The game will be web synced live for $5.95 and can be seen along with the live stats at www.bamastatesports.com.  WVAS will also be broadcasting live from the game and to reach WVAS live on the internet just click on the WVAS link at ASU's Gameday Central.
