MONTGOMERY, Ala. – The Alabama State softball team is prepared to open its season in Auburn, Ala. at the Jane B. Moore Field on Thursday, Feb. 9 against host Auburn at 6 p.m.
This marks the fourth meeting between the two schools, with Auburn leading the series 3-0. The last meeting was March 18, 2009, when the Lady Hornets fell to the Tigers 4-0.
“We are extremely excited to open the season with Auburn University,” ASU head coach Telma Hall. “I think that it is a great atmosphere to play against one of our back yard rivalry. I think that this will be a great opener to get us started this season. They have a great club down there and we know that they give us good game.”
ASU returns eight starters from last season's squad and looks to start their season off strong. The coaching staff will look for its seniors to step up and motivate the less experienced players.
Last season, the Lady Hornets finished the year fourth in the Southwestern Athletic Conference Eastern Division and fifth overall.
Sophomore center fielder
Meagan Dixon was a force at the plate, belting eight home runs and driving in 37 RBIs for ASU last season.
Second-Team All-SWAC performer second baseman Brehanna Rodriques led the team and was third in the conference with a .440 batting average. Rodriques also led the team with 51 hits and recorded a team high 20 steals last season.
