Lady Hornets Falls in Season Opener to Auburn

Box Score Box Score AUBURN, Ala. – The Alabama State softball team lost to Auburn, 6-0 at the Auburn Invitational in the season opener for both teams Thursday evening at Jane B. Moore Field.

“I think any loss is tough,” ASU head coach Telma Hall said. “The one thing that I like about it was we fought for all seven innings. I think that when we didn't accomplish what we wanted to at the plate, we came back and played good defense. For us to have a pretty young team coming in with not too many seniors, I'm proud of us. It lets us know where we are, and what we have to do moving forward throughout the season.”

Preseason first-team All-SWAC recipient Meagan Dixon recorded the only hit for the Lady Hornets in the top of the fourth, hitting a hard line drive off the right-centerfield wall for a single.

The Tigers scored the game's first run in the bottom of the third inning, before braking the game open with three runs in the fifth and two more in the sixth.

Junior hurler Amanda Gracia went 3 1/3 innings for the Lady Hornets, giving up one run on six hits, striking out one.

This game marks the first of five games that will be played throughout the weekend at the Auburn Invitational. The Lady Hornets (0-1) are set to face Indiana Purdue Fort Wayne Friday at 5:30 p.m. On Saturday, ASU will take on Bowling Green State in game one of its double-header at 10 a.m. and face Appalachian State at 3 p.m. Alabama State will end the tournament playing Wright State Sunday at 11:30 a.m.
