The Alabama State baseball team will look to get back on the winning track when they travel to face Florida A&M in a two-game series Tuesday and Wednesday. Alabama State will face the Rattlers Tuesday at 5 p.m. and Wednesday at 2 p.m.
The Hornets (4-13 overall, 3-3 in Southwestern Athletic Conference play), are coming off a week in which ASU lost at UAB Wednesday and were swept in a three-game weekend series at Jackson State.
Hitting continues to be the big Achilles heel for the Hornets, who are hitting only .208 for the season. ASU put runners on base through the J-State series, but hitters struggled to get them home, as the Hornets left 22 players on base against the Tigers.
“We need to concentrate more on having better at-bats,” head coach
Mervyl Melendez said. “If we make the necessary adjustments, I believe we will be back on the winning side. We just have to concentrate more at the plate more than we've done so far.”
This week, ASU continues its season-long road trip with two games at FAMU and four games at Gardner-Webb this Friday-Sunday. FAMU won its conference series this past weekend over Bethune-Cookman.
“With Florida A&M coming off a series win over their rivals, they're going to come in with a lot of confidence,” Melendez said. “We need to play to win. We're going to face them in Tallahassee, which is a tough place to play. We have to concentrate on the little things we can do to in order to win ball games. This weekend, playing four games is a challenge for us because of pitching. We have six games this week overall, so we'll need to make sure our starters give us quality innings to be able to get some rested arms, especially our relievers. We have to put some runs on the board early to have our pitchers pitch with a lead for a change.”
