Box Score 2 Box Score SAVANNAH, Ga. – The Alabama State softball team scored a season-high 16 runs to defeated Morgan State 16-7 in game one and in game two downed host team Savannah State 3-0 at Tiger Field today.
“I am really proud of my young ladies today,” head coach Telma Hall. “I gave them a challenge for this series; to prepare for conference and begin to make a change in the course of the season. They took the challenge, competed and played how I knew they could. We hit the ball exceptionally well and our pitchers worked hard today to help us keep our momentum. We showed discipline in the box and the confidence radiated through the facility. All of these components are needed to beat good programs. You could really feel the presence of the “Hornets Swarm.”
After a
Brehanna Rodrigues leadoff walk, the Lady Hornets scored two runs in the top of the first off a single to left field by
Ayesha Famble and a sacrifice fly to right field by
Meagan Dixon. A two-out two RBI double by Rodrigues scored
Sosefina Toilolo from third and
Whitley Golson from second, making the score 4-0 in the top of the second.
Breeya Wright recorded her first solo home run of the season to left field, with no outs in the top of the fourth.
Rodrigues collected a single down the left field line to score
Mercedes Frazier from third to make it a 6-0 lead. Brehanna singled to score Michelle Dick and Frazier. Famble recorded a double to bring home Golson and Rodrigues to make the score 11-0.
Morgan State rallied to prevent the 11-run six inning run rule by scoring five runs in the bottom of the sixth.
Alabama State added five more runs in the seventh to cap the scoring at 16-7 and pick up the win.
Rodrigues had a stellar performance, going 4-for-4 including five RBI with three runs.
The Lady Hornets started game two with a single to shortstop in the top of the third by Rodrigues. She stole home to score the first run of the game.
Wright scored on a double to left center from Frazier. A double by Toilolo scored Famble from third base.
Bailey Patt picked up the win in both games and pitched a shutout, going 4 innings gifting only two hits to Savannah State (9-14).
Alabama State (4-19) will face Mercer in a double-header on Monday, March 17 in Macon, Ga. starting at 3 p.m.
