ASU Opens SWAC Play vs. Bulldogs

The Alabama State baseball team  opens the Southwestern Athletic Conference slate by hosting a three-game series against archrival Alabama A&M (5-5). Saturday's twin bill begins at 1 p.m., while Sunday's single game begins at noon.

Bamastatesports.com will have live stats of all three games. Sunday's game will be video streamed live on Hornet Vision for $5.95.

Catcher Richard Gonzalez has been on a tear offensively at the plate, batting .444 (8-for-18) in the past five games with three multi-hit games during that stretch. Gonzalez had a career-high three hits, including a double and triple, and an RBI in the Hornets' win over Nicholls State on Feb. 25, and went 2-for-4 with an RBI and run scored Wednesday vs. Auburn.

Listed at 5-foot-4 on the roster, Einar Muniz has played big for the Hornets at third base. In the past six games, including five consecutive starts, Muniz is batting .292 (7-of-24) and is on a six-game hitting streak. He has also been a force in the field in those six games, handling 18 of 20 chances (six putouts, 12 assists), including turning an unassisted double play Saturday vs. Stony Brook.

Waldyvan Estrada is batting .348 (8-of-23) in the past six games, including four two-hit games. Estrada has had three extra bases hits (two doubles, one triple) during the time with three RBI. Estrada leads the Hornets in batting average (.289), hits (11), RBI (six), slugging percentage (.474), and multi-hit games (five), while tied for the team lead in doubles (two), triples (one) and home runs (one).

1B/C Manny Rodriguez is the only Hornet to reach base in nine of the 10 games this season, and has done so in a variety ways.  He has reached base three times with a hit, three times with a walk, and three times via hit by pitch. Seemingly a magnet for the baseball, Rodriguez has been hit by pitch a conference-leading seven times this season, including twice each against Kennesaw State and Stony Brook. He leads ASU with a .385 on-base percentage.
