BIRMINGHAM – The Alabama State baseball team lost a non-conference game to UAB 12-3 Wednesday afternoon at Young Memorial Field.
The Hornets (4-10) again started fast, scoring twice in the top of the first.
Einar Muniz' led off with a double, and
Leo Rojas was hit by pitch. With one out,
Richard Gonzalez ripped a two-run triple to right center to put Alabama State ahead 2-0.
UAB (10-3) answered with three runs in the first and four runs in the second to take a 7-2 lead.
“We were not very competitive on the mound,” head coach
Mervyl Melendez said. “We open the top of the first with two runs and do a very good job offensively. Then, we can't throw strikes. In midweek, we're not as deep as need to be pitching-wise. As I said last week, if our starting pitching can't get us through five innings, we're going to be in trouble. That's exactly what happened today. The starting pitching mid-week has not been very competitive, and it's frustrating because all they have to do is throw strikes.”
The Blazers extended their lead with one run in the sixth and four in the seventh.
Alabama State completed the scoring in the eighth when
Jordan Mims tripled and scored on Muniz' sacrifice fly.
The Hornets return to action Friday night at Jackson State in the first of a three-game series. Game time is 6 p.m.
