Baseball Loses SWAC Road Opener at Jackson State

Box Score
JACKSON, Miss – The Alabama State baseball team lost 2-1 to Jackson State Friday night in a Southwestern Athletic Conference game at Robert Braddy Field.

After falling behind 1-0 after one inning, Alabama State (4-11 overall, 3-1 SWAC) tied the game in the seventh inning as Richard Gonzalez' two-out RBI single to center field scored Waldyvan Estrada, who had reach on a fielder's choice, to tie the score at 1-1.

In the eighth inning, an Alabama State two-out throwing error with the bases loaded allowed the winning run to score for Jackson State (7-6, 3-1).

Joel Alvira (1-2) was the hard-luck loser for the Hornets, allowing only six hits and one earned run in eight innings, walking five and striking out five.

“He gave us a chance to win. He flat-out gave us a chance to win,” head coach Mervyl Melendez said of Alvira. “He competed; the only guy that competed on the field for us. Everyone else was either on panic mode or passive mode. Four errors – we average way too many errors – and the sad thing is that's where we spend a lot our time, on the defensive side in practice. Right now, we're not getting it. We don't believe that's important. We're not getting the concept that if you make mistakes – which is the reason that we lost – they're going to come back to hurt you.”

The teams will wrap up the series with a Saturday doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m.
