Baseball to Face Oklahoma in Weekend Series

NORMAN, Okla. –  The Alabama State baseball team returns to action in a three-game weekend series beginning Friday at the University of Oklahoma.

The Hornets (16-23) will face the Sooners (23-14) Friday at 6:30 p.m., Saturday at 2 p.m. and Sunday at 1 p.m. Weekend Gameday Central here at www.bamastatesports.com will be your one-stop-shop for the free live audio links to the Hornets' webcast, video link to watch the Sooners' video web  stream for $9.95, and free live stats.

For the first time this season, Alabama State did not have a mid-week game scheduled, which allowed for a bit of rest and recovery after a grueling nine-week schedule in which the Hornets have nearly surpassed the total number of games played (43) last season.

“This week we actually got back in rhythm and got our legs back,” head coach Mervyl Melendez said. “I thought we were a little fatigued last week and the week prior to that, so we needed a little break. We concentrated on mechanics and fundamentals rather than intensity this week. I've seen our practices improve so I'm looking forward to a great weekend from our guys.”

This is the first baseball meeting between the Hornets and Oklahoma, a member of the Big XII Conference. OU is on a five-game winning streak, including a three-game sweep last weekend of conference foe Missouri and a win over Oral Roberts this past Tuesday. The Sooners have been ranked in various national polls throughout the season and are currently ranked 26th by Collegiate Baseball.

“It was important; it's the only way you get better by playing against good teams,” Melendez said. “We're excited to be here and playing a quality team like Oklahoma. We're looking forward to a great three games and I know the guys are excited.”

JACKSON STATE GAME RULED FINAL: The Southwestern Athletic Conference has ruled last Sunday's halted game between the Hornets and Jackson State as a final. JSU wins 2-1, the score of the game at the time it was stopped by umpires. All statistics from the game do count as official.
