Mercer Tops Hornets

Box Score
The Alabama State baseball team lost the first of a two-game series to Mercer 6-0 Tuesday at the Wheeler-Watkins Baseball Complex.

Mercer (25-18) scored four runs in the third to take the lead for good. Alabama State managed just four hits, two each by Richard Amion and Richard Gonzalez.

Ron Frost had a career-high 11 strikeouts in seven innings pitched in a losing effort for the Hornets (16-27).

“I thought Ron Frost did an amazing job,” head coach Mervyl Melendez said. “In the third inning, they scored four runs but it all started with a play at first base (infield hit) that should have been made. Then the squeeze bunt they executed, we didn't make a play defensively. They score a couple of runs after that on an error. When we're not hitting, because we are not right now, we need to keep the other team from scoring runs. Our players need to understand we need to minimize the damage as much as we can because offensively right now we can't make anything work.”

The teams will complete the two-game series Wednesday at 5 p.m.
