Hornets Lose Series to Mercer

Box Score
The Alabama State baseball team lost to Mercer 6-2 Wednesday in the final game of a two-game series at the Wheeler-Watkins Baseball Complex.

Mercer (26-18) scored three runs in the fourth inning to take the lead. Alabama State (16-28) scored in the fourth inning. Darrion Pedro singled with one out, advanced to second after Tyler Ray was hit by pitch, and then stole third base. Pedro then scored on a fielder's choice grounder to cut the deficit to 3-1.

After Mercer scored two runs in the sixth inning, the Hornets scored again in the bottom of the sixth. Emmanuel Marrero, who singled to lead off the inning, advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt and scored on a throwing error to cut the deficit to 5-2, but Alabama State could get no closer.

“We've lost nine in a row right now,” head coach Mervyl Melendez said. “I think the guys are a little down on themselves. I believe they've lost the edge of knowing how to win ball games, and it's disappointing.”

The Hornets return to action Saturday at home, hosting Mississippi Valley State in a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m. at the Wheeler-Watkins Baseball Complex.
