ASU Softball Fell 9-5 to Texas Southern

Box Score IRONDALE, Ala. – The Alabama State softball team (12-37 overall/7-10 SWAC) fell 9-5 to the Texas Southern Lady Tigers on Thursday, at the Southwestern Athletic Conference Tournament in Irondale, Ala.

“We came out with good intensity and we're hitting better than we've hit in a couple of weeks now,” head coach Telma Hall said. “I'm very proud of Sosefina for coming out her slump, and Brehanna doing what she does best. We have to keep our mindset on our goals and what we are here for. We can definitely come back from this, but we have stay consist and come out tomorrow and make a statement.”

The Lady Tigers (27-14 overall/ 13-3 SWAC) drew first blood, hitting two home runs in the bottom of the second to take a 2-0 lead over ASU.

The Lady Hornets started buzzing back, off a Sosefina Toilolo solo blast to left field in the top of the fourth, making the score 2-1 TSU. A Lady Tiger throwing error by the pitcher scored Brehanna Rodrigues, knotting the game at 2-all in the top of the fifth.

Texas Southern recorded two runs in the bottom half of the fifth to regain a 4-2 lead over the Lady Hornets. TSU added five more runs in the sixth.

Alabama State rallied back in the seventh to score three runs, but it wasn't enough to prevail.

The Lady Hornets will face the University of Arkansas Pine-Bluff at the Shea Brothers Softball Complex Friday, May 11 at 6 p.m.

“UAPB is a better team now,” said Hall. “I think they are very competitive team. We know we'll have to come out and beat their level of intensity tomorrow to win, so we'll be looking for a dog fight tomorrow.
