Hornets to Play DH at Mercer to End Regular Season

The Alabama State baseball team will play its final regular season contests Tuesday at Mercer in a pair of seven-inning games.

Tuesday's games begin at 3 p.m. CT and will be broadcast free of charge at bamastatesports.com/showcase.

Alabama State (20-32) will take on Mercer (29-18) to conclude the home-and-home series between the teams, who initially met April 24-25 in Montgomery at the Wheeler-Watkins Baseball Complex. The Bears won both meetings, 6-0 and 6-2.

The Hornets are coming off perhaps their most resilient victory of the season, defeating defending Southwestern Athletic Conference Champion Alcorn State 13-12 Sunday on Senior Day for the Braves in the final game of the three-game series. Each time Alabama State scored, Alcorn State responded either in the same inning or the next as neither team scored in consecutive innings without the opponent answering. The Hornets avoided the sweep by being patient at the plate (drawing a season-high 13 walks), aggressive on the base paths (stealing a season-high 12 bases), and clutch when it counted (scoring 10 runs in the final three innings).

“By us having good at-bats and not trying to do too much at the plate, it allowed our hitters to see more pitches leading to better results at the plate,” head coach Mervyl Melendez said. “Base running was executed almost to perfection, but we got on base because of the great at-bats.”

The Hornets will open SWAC Tournament play Wednesday, May 16 against Prairie View at Noon in Baton Rouge, La.
