Softball Drops Two During Hornet Invitational

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 The Alabama State Softball team fell to Eastern Illinois 12-0 and to Belmont 10-0 day two of the Hornet Invitational at the Barbara Williams Softball Complex.

“We didn't show up, our bats didn't show up, and we have had more errors this weekend, then we've played in games,” Head Coach Telma Hall said. “We have to get that monkey off our back. We have to dig deep, find some pride, and give our fans something to cheer about. Our fans seem to be more excited than we are right now. We have to come out tomorrow and create a different environment.”

Junior Stephanie Hernandez led the Lady Hornets (0-8 overall), going 2-for-2 against the Lady Panthers. ASU had three base runners throughout the game but couldn't score the runs.

Freshman Aleesa Yanez had the only other hit for the Lady Hornets, going 1-for-1 in game one.

EIU (1-1) scored runs in the third, fourth, and fifth innings to seal the victory over Alabama State.

In game two, the Lady Hornets faced Belmont. After trailing the entire game, ASU's Rachel Mills started a one out rally in the fourth inning but the ladies came up short, leaving two runners stranded in scoring position.

“It was good to see Rachel get the base hit to start the inning off,” said Hall. “Being that she's struggling at the plate, I think it gave our team a little spark, but what we're going to have to do right now is put the hits together and get some runs on the board. I think that's where we're going to have to dig deep and get it done, by getting some runs on the board.”

Mills, Brehanna Rodrigues, Hernandez, Brittnei Price, and Kimberly Ross all had one hit each in the contest.

The Lady Hornets will play host to Eastern Illinois at 12:30 p.m. on Sunday, February 17 in the final day of the Hornet Invitational at the Barbara Williams Softball Complex.
