Kennesaw State Edges Hornets

Box Score
Alabama State fell to Kennesaw State 2-1 Wednesday at the Wheeler-Watkins Baseball Complex.

The Hornets (8-2) scored in the second inning on a solo home run to left field by Dexter Price to tie the game at 1-1. The Owls (6-3) pushed across a run in the fourth to take the lead for good as both pitching staffs controlled the game.

Alabama State stranded runners on second and third base in the third inning, as well as runners on third base in the seventh and ninth innings.

Hornet pitchers Hunter McIntosh and Julio Valdez combined to limit Kennesaw State to only six hits in the contest, five of them singles.

“Once again, we had good relief pitching by Julio, which kept us in the ball game,” head coach Mervyl Melendez said. “Other than the walks in the first three innings (six), I thought our pitching was pretty good. In a 2-1 ball game, you need that timely hit, and we didn't get it done tonight. We needed to make adjustments offensively, and we didn't make them. We were on the other end of a one-run ball game Tuesday (in beating Troy 4-3), and tonight we fell a little short. Now we have to regroup and work on the things we didn't do well.”

Alabama State begins Southwestern Athletic Conference play Saturday at noon in a doubleheader at Alcorn State.
