Box Score 2 The Alabama State women's basketball team dropped a 53-48 nail-biter to the Mississippi Valley State Devilettes on Monday evening at the Dunn-Oliver Acadome.
“We did not turn up the intensity the final three or four minutes in the contest,” Head Coach
Freda Freeman-Jackson said. “They were playing relentlessly, hustling and we didn't match that. They got several offensive rebounds and loose balls. We weren't hungry enough tonight.”
“They had eleven offensive rebounds in the first half alone. I can't tell you how many they had in the second half. We didn't do a good job of closing out the game. You have to come up with the victory. There's no way a team out-hustle you in your own gym.
The Lady Hornets (7-15 overall/5-6 SWAC) were outrebounded by the Devilettes 52 -47. Junior forward
Brittney Howard led ASU with a game and career-high 13 rebounds and added six points.
“We had too many miscues in this game,” Freeman-Jackson stated. “We missed too many wide-open shots, and that came back to haunt us tonight.”
Alabama State opened the game on an 11-0 run with sophomore guard
Kierra Paige knocking down the first seven points for the Lady Hornets, before Jasmyne Sanders hit two free-throws to get MVSU on the scoreboard.
ASU shot only 27 percent from the field for the game. In the second half, Alabama State went four-for-30, making only 13.3 percent.
“Well, we'll have to find a way to forget about this one, because we let this one get away from us,” said Freeman-Jackson. “This was a heartbreaker for us, being up by eight points and losing it like we did.”
Paige led all Lady Hornets scorers with a career-tying 18 points, while
Quentori Alford recorded 10 rebounds in the effort.
Double-digit scorers for MVSU (10-12/7-4) were Lenise Stallings with 19 points to lead all scorers, and Alia Frank with 10 points and 12 rebounds.
The Lady Hornets will host in-state and conference foe Alabama A&M at the Dunn-Oliver Acadome on the campus of ASU. Tipoff is slated for 3:00 p.m.
