Box Score 2 MACON, Ga. – The Alabama State softball team fell to Indiana-University Purdue-University Indianapolis 5-3 and Mercer 14-7 in its season opener Friday evening at Sikes Field at the Mercer Invitational in game one.
“We started both games great,” Head Coach Telma Hall said. “The finishing process must become complete. It was good to see Meagan work hard to get back in her groove. Brehanna stepped up big defensively today at shortstop. They really gave the team a boost. Being captain and co-captain, they have done a really good job enforcing the expectations we are looking for this season.”
“The start of each game is what we want. We will definitely focus on finishing a complete game. This is only the beginning for them as a team. We still have a ways to go, but I know we're progressing as a unit.”
The Lady Hornets (0-2 overall) began the game scoring senior shortstop
Brehanna Rodrigues off a Kimberly Ross's ground out RBI in the top of the first. Junior first baseman
Stephanie Hernandez singled through the left side to advancing Dixon home from third, making the score 2-0 after one.
In the third, Dixon hit a solo home run to left field to take a 3-0 lead.
The Jaguars (1-0) scored a run in the bottom of the fourth and four in the sixth innings, to take a commanding 5-3 lead and the ballgame.
Dixon went 3-for-4 on the day, including two singles, two runs, and a RBI in the loss. Rodrigues and Hernandez finished the day hitting a single each going 1-for-3. As a team, Alabama State had three runs, five hits, and four errors in the contest.
In game two, the Lady Hornets dropped a seven point first inning lead to gift Mercer the 14-7 win. Alabama State came out swinging the bat, hitting three singles and a double to put seven points on the scoreboard.
Mercer (2-0) scored runs in every inning, except for the fourth inning.
Rodrigues went 2-for-3 with two hits, a run, and three RBI. Dixon had another great performance, going 2-for-3 scoring a run of her own.
The Lady Hornets will play Mercer at noon and IUPUI at 4:30 p.m. Saturday, February 9 day two in the Mercer Tournament at Sikes Field.
