The Alabama State softball team will host Samford at the Barbara Williams Softball Complex on Tuesday, March 12. First pitch is slated for 5 p.m.
“Samford is another great in-state rival we host on our schedule this year,” Assistant Coach Kevin Montgomery said. “We're trying to represent for the University and try to give Samford a run for their money. Right now, we're struggling at the plate, except for about two or three hitters. They are getting on base, but aren't able to score because they have anyone to knock them in. Our pitching is keeping us in games, but we have to start scoring more runs to have a chance at winning. Hopefully, we can put some runs on the board, and give Samford a good showing, something for our fans to see.”
The Lady Hornets are coming off a disappointing weekend at the Tigers Classic in Nashville, Tenn. dropping each of their competitions. As a team, ASU is currently holding a .206 batting average, including 32 runs scored, 102 hits, eleven doubles, three triples, a home run, and 26 RBI.
Senior shortstop
Brehanna Rodrigues recorded a .571 batting average over the weekend which included two doubles, three runs scored, and eight hits. Rodrigues is currently leading the team batting a .424 on the season, with 25 hits, 12 runs scored, two doubles, a triple, and four RBI. She has a .492 slugging percentage and is 10-for-eleven in the stolen bases department.
“Bre owned the plate in every game for us this weekend,” said Montgomery. “She tried putting the team on her back this weekend. She kept saying that she wanted to get us going and that's what she tried doing. She was a tough out in every at bat. She did everything she could to get the offense ignited, but we didn't respond for her. Hopefully, we can start putting something together tomorrow and it'll trickle down on into tournament play.”
