The Alabama State Men's tennis team will host Nicholls State Sunday, March 3 at the Olean Black Underwood Tennis Complex on the campus of ASU.
“Nicholls is another great Division I program we are playing this season,” head coach
Anuk Christiansz said. “They have been around for a long time and they'll possibly have a squad full of veteran players. Tennis is one of those sports, where playing better teams only helps you get better and stronger for the future.”
The men (4-5 overall, 2-1 SWAC) won two of their last three games during the Southwestern Athletic Conference West Roundup last weekend, with wins over in-state rival Alabama A&M (5-1) and Arkansas Pine-Bluff (7-0). The Hornets lost their final match during the tournament over Prairie View A&M.
“The guys did very well during the roundup on last weekend,” Christiansz said. “We had made tremendous strides, gaining ground in our conference. We could have won more matches in doubles and singles, but it was a great step forward for our program on the girls and guys side.”
“There's always opportunity for improvement on both sides. The guys are playing against veteran teams and they are learning from the bigger programs and can see the way the other teams gel as a unit. We have only six guys and we don't have as much depth as some of our opponents, but they are always willing to fight for each other on the court. We are in a great position in the terms of where our program is right now and where we are headed.”
Alabama State is 3-2 at home, is 0-2 away, and at neutral sites is 1-1 on the season.
NSU (6-4, 2-1) defeated Alcorn State 6-1 during its last outing at the Colonel Tennis Complex on Tuesday evening.
