Softball Continues Conference Slate at Miss. Valley

The Alabama State softball team will continue its conference slate on the road in a three game series against Mississippi Valley State Thursday, March 28 at the MVSU Softball Field in Itta Bena, Miss. First pitch is slated for 6 p.m.

The Lady Hornets will look to improve its record over the two day three-game series. These games are very important for ASU to move ahead in the SWAC Eastern division; while currently sitting in fourth in the division.

“This series is very important for us,” head coach Telma Hall said. “We are coming in as the underdogs, so we understand what we're up against. Valley is a tough out at the plate and they are good defensively. We will have to put runs on the board and keep our heads in the game defensively to come away with some wins.”

Meagan Dixon led Alabama State to a 2-3 record during the SWAC Roundup with eleven hits, two doubles, five runs scored, four RBI, and a homerun. The Canyon Springs, Calif. native hit .579, with a .842 slugging percentage, and went three for three in the stolen base department.

“Meagan stepped up for us in some clutch situations, as well as Bailey Patt, Tamara Williams, Brehanna Rodrigues, and Stephanie Hernandez last weekend to name a few,” said Hall. “I thought all the girls stepped up in some facet. I think we have to take it one game at a time from here on out and play like we know how to play.”

As a team, the ladies had a .367 batting average last weekend after collecting 54 hits, five doubles, four homeruns, 24 RBI, and 31 runs scored.

Rodrigues now leads the team and is sixth in the conference with a .417 batting average, including 35 hits, 19 runs scored, two doubles, a triple and five RBI. The Redlands, Calif. native leads the league with 20 stolen bases.

“Overall, I'm happy for the progression I seen last weekend out of the ladies,” said Hall. “We still need some work on our defense and hitting with runners in scoring position.
