MONTGOMERY, Ala.—Alabama State and Troy met on the hard courts in a men's and women's tennis match with the visitors from Troy coming out victorious in both matches at the Olean Black Underwood Tennis Center by identical 7-0 scores.
Troy's men were able to jump out in front by winning the point in doubles play. They won all three doubles matches, but the match at number on turned out to be a thrilling match won by Troy 8-6. ASU's
Bobby Brand and
Julian Cseszko trailed 5-2, but came all the way back to even the score at six. With Troy's doubles team of Sami Ghorbel and Andre Stabile clinging to a 7-6 lead, ASU had a chance to break the serve and even the match at seven, but Ghorbel and Stabile won five straight points to win the match 8-6.
Troy's Anas Rouchdi and Patrick Eichler defeated ASU's
Lex Pierre and
Jarred Thompson 8-4 at two doubles and Tommy Cundy and Tadju Davis from Troy defeated Stafan Vojcic at
Roderick Williams at three doubles by the same score.
In singles action Troy won all six matches, but not without some drama. In four singles Eichler and Vojcic went into a tie breaker third set with Eichler winning 10-6. Five singles also went to a third set tie break with Troy's Davis defeated ASU's Williams 10-8.
While ASU's women continue to improve, they were no match for the talented women's team from Troy. Candela Munoz-Giron and Anja Cosovic defeated Michelle Barton and
Brianna Fairley at three doubles 8-0 to start the doubles action. Then Troy's number one team of Karoline Grymel and Hannah Toro defeated ASU's
Pauline Denis and Melissa Telfor 8-5 at one and Lyubor Dorofeeva and Rosavra Ramirez-Vega defeated
Arantxia Wijngaarde and
Katja Kraus from ASU 8-6.
In singles action Troy was able to close out the match winning all six games in straight sets.
“I know some of the scores may not show it, but both of our teams played and competed hard today against two good teams,” Head Coach
Anuk Christiansz said. “I can see the improvement both teams are making and even though we are shorthanded, we are a long way from where we were when the season started and I appreciate the effort the team is making in getting better.”
The ASU men are now 4-7 overall while Troy moves to 4-6. The Lady Hornets are 2-9 on the season while Troy improves to 8-4. Both teams will be back in action tomorrow (Saturday) when they host a tri match with Alabama A&M and the University of New Orleans. ASU will face the Bulldogs at 9 a.m. and turn around and play New Orleans at 2 p.m.
