Box Score 1 Meagan Dixon had four hits and five RBI to lead the Alabama State softball team to a doubleheader sweep of Alcorn State on Saturday at the Barbara Williams Softball Complex.
“The wins against Alcorn were great momentum builders for us going into our final stretch of the regular season,” Head Coach Telma Hall said. “I think the girls came out and played exceptional this weekend. Our pitchers have once again given us a good defensive front and have been setting the tone for us here lately.”
The Lady Hornets won game one 12-4, and game two 4-0 in a three-game set.
The weekend sweep gives the Lady Hornets a 8-27 overall record and a 8-4 SWAC record.
Game 1 – Hornets 12, Lady Braves 4: Alabama State started fast with a three-run first and second-inning, and added a run in the fourth to take a seven-run cushion after four innings of work.
The Lady Braves rallied back in the fifth scoring four runs of their own, but it wasn't enough to catch up with ASU's offense.
A three-run fifth inning and a two-run sixth capped the 12-4 ballgame for Alabama State in game one.
Dixon went 2-for-2, including five RBI, a three-run homerun, and two runs scored to lead the Lady Hornets at the plate.
Destyni Valencia picked up her third win on the season going six complete innings, giving up four runs and four walks, while striking out six.
Game 2 – Lady Hornets 4, Alcorn 0:
Alabama State got off to a slow start, keeping the game scoreless going into the bottom of the sixth inning.
Dixon led off the inning with a single and advanced on a throwing error to second base. A muffed throw off the bat of
Kim Ross moved to Dixon to third.
Aleesa Yanez tripled to right center, scoring
Tacresha Favors, who pinched ran for Ross and Dixon, making it a 2-0 contest.
Bailey Patt doubled, scoring Yanez from third to collect another run, before
Michele Dick hit a single up the middle to knock in Patt, to make it a 4-0 ballgame.
Kim Ross made a game-ending diving catch in right field to seal the game.
Brehanna Rodrigues and Dixon went 2-for-3 to lead the Lady Hornets in game two. Melissa Christman picked up the win, going seven innings, giving up six hits and a walk, while striking out a batter. This was her first career shutout.
“Melissa did a great job for us today on the mound and picking up her first career shutout,” said Hall. “Meagan has stepped up this weekend, giving us some motivation at the plate. We definitely need this momentum to continue going throughout the rest of the season, heading into Jackson and finishing up with the make-up games against Valley.”
“We are headed in the right direction right now. We just have to keep our eyes on the prize, stay focused, and learn how to finish innings after getting two outs.”
The Lady Hornets will return to action on Wednesday, April 17 as they host Kennesaw State in its final home game of the season beginning at 4 p.m.
