Hornets To Host Rattlers

Coming off a three-game weekend sweep, the Alabama State baseball team will host Florida A&M in a mid-week series Tuesday and Wednesday at the Wheeler-Watkins Baseball Complex.

First pitch both nights is at 6 p.m.

The Hornets (22-17 overall, 13-5 SWAC) scored 43 runs in their series win over archrival Alabama A&M in Huntsville. Alabama State set season highs in runs in the final two games of the series, scoring 16 runs in the nightcap of Saturday's doubleheader, and 18 in the finale on Sunday. The Hornets scored at least three runs in an inning seven times over the weekend, highlighted by yesterday's game in which ASU scored five runs in both the first and sixth innings, and four in the ninth.

“The at-bats actually got better as the weekend went on,” head coach Mervyl Melendez said. “I was happy we kept the same approach throughout the weekend. The key to winning ball games is not to have just one big inning, but to have consecutive big innings. We had big innings in all three games. We put good at-bats together, we didn't force the issue, and didn't swing at a lot of bad pitches.”

Prior to this weekend's Southwestern Athletic Conference Eastern Division showdown at Jackson State, the Hornets will host Florida A&M (3-27), a program Melendez is very familiar with from his many years as a player, assistant coach, and head coach in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference.

“We have a lot of experience against Florida A&M,” said Melendez, who's coaching staff also played and coached against the Rattlers. “We know what type of club they typically have. For us to be successful, we have to do a lot of the things we did this past weekend. We'll have to be patient at the plate, have good at-bats, and that's what I'm looking for our team to do.”
