“Kennesaw is a great program,” ASU's Head Coach Telma Hall said. “I think Scott Whitlock has done an excellent job of building his program and for us to get a win here today in front of our fans and Alumni is a great milestone for our program. It shows you what we're doing here. We're really working hard daily. To beat a team like Kennesaw, it took heart and effort and that's what we did tonight.”
KSU took a 1-0 lead in the top of third inning, scoring Kara Chambers from third off a single to left center.
Back-to-back singles by freshman
Rachel Mills and senior
Brehanna Rodrigues led off the third inning for the Lady Hornets. With two outs and runners on first and second, freshman
Makayla Webster lined a rocket over the left fence, homering in Mills and Rodrigues to take a 3-1 lead over the Owls.
“We were able to get some key hits today,” said Hall. “Having a freshman come through for us like Makayla did today was huge. I think that we're having some good defensive plays and working hard at the plate battling. I'm happy that we're finally coming into our own.”
Bailey Patt got the win for the Lady Hornets. She allowed three runs over seven innings, striking out three, walking two and surrendering nine hits.
“I'm glad that the girls are locked in and hungry at the same time,” Hall stated. “Hopefully we can continue this run throughout the rest of the season and tournament play.”
Rodrigues led ASU at the plate, going 2-for-3 with two runs scored.
Alabama State will face UAB on Tuesday, April 23 at UAB Field. First pitch is slated for 4 p.m.
