Box Score BIRMINGHAM, Ala. –
Brehanna Rodrigues recorded two hits, including a game-winning RBI to lead the Alabama State softball team to a 3-2 victory over UAB on Tuesday evening. ASU has now won five consecutive games and seven of their last eight contests.
“The ladies played their hearts out today,” Head Coach Telma Hall said. “We've gotten back-to-back non-conference wins before playing Florida A&M. Hopefully, we can use this momentum going into conference play this weekend and throughout. Destyni pitched well to keep us in the game as well as Brehanna coming through with the game-winning hit taking us into the bottom of the seventh.”
The Lady Hornets (11-28 overall) trailed the Blazers 2-0 going into the sixth inning. A one-out single to left field off the bat of
Tamara Williams got ASU started.
Meagan Dixon tripled on a nine-pitch at bat, scoring Williams from first.
Kim Ross singled in Dixon, tying the game at 2-all headed into the seventh inning.
“UAB is a great program and has a lot of scrappy players,” said Hall. “I'm elated that our pitching staff were able to keep us in the game and giving us a chance to pull out the victory.”
In the seventh,
Bailey Patt was hit by a pitch to lead the inning off for Alabama State.
Tacresha Favors came in to pitch run for Patt, who also recorded the save on the mound.
Stephanie Hernandez advanced Favors from first to second on a sacrifice bunt. With one out and a runner on base, Rodrigues singled to center field bringing Favors around from second to score and take the ballgame.
Destyni Valencia picked up her fourth win on the season, going 6 1/3 innings for ASU.
“Destyni pitched well to keep us in the game as well as Brehanna coming through with the game-winning hit taking us into the bottom of the seventh,” Hall stated. “We will have to continue to be consistent on defense and hit the ball in clutch situations if we want to continue being successful down the stretch.”
The Alabama State Lady Hornets will travel to Tallahassee, Fla. to face the Florida A&M Rattlers Wednesday, April 24 at 5 p.m. (CT) before facing conference leader Jackson State in a three-game set in Jackson, Miss. beginning Friday, April 26.
