Hornets To Play Final Non-Conference Game At Jacksonville State

The Alabama State baseball team will play its final non-conference game of the regular season Wednesday at Jacksonville State.

The Hornets (27-22) and Gamecocks (25-19) are scheduled for a 6:30 p.m. first pitch at Rudy Abbott Field in game originally scheduled for March 5 in Jacksonville but was postponed due to inclement weather.

Alabama State is coming off a weekend series loss at defending national champion Arizona. The Hornets out-hit the Wildcats in game one, and led Arizona 3-1 in the eighth inning of game two, but fell short of winning in the series.

This is the second of two meetings between the Hornets and Jacksonville State, which left Montgomery with a 1-0 win at the Wheeler-Watkins Baseball Complex. Anthony Ricciardi allowed just four hits and one run in the contest, walking three and striking out six in a well-pitched game by both staffs, who combined to allow only nine hits and strikeout 13 batters.

In fact, the last three meetings have been decided by a total of four runs. Jacksonville State won 5-4 in 14 innings at home last season, and defeated the Hornets 8-6 in Montgomery, in which Alabama State left the bases loaded to end the game.

The Gamecocks are coming off a three-game sweep of their Ohio Valley Conference series at Southeast Missouri State and lead the OVC by one game.

Alabama State will conclude its eight-game road trip to end the regular season this weekend at Mississippi Valley State.
