Yanez's Contributions Lead Lady Hornets to Sweep of Alabama A&M

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 Aleesa Yanez had four hits and two RBI to lead Alabama State to a doubleheader sweep of Alabama A&M on Saturday at the Barbara Williams Softball Complex.
 
 The Lady Hornets won game one 8-6, and game two 6-5 in a much needed three-game set.
 
“Today was a big win for the girls here at home,” Head Coach Telma Hall said. “It's been a long tough battle with A&M and us, having the history between the two schools. We did a lot today.”
 
Meagan Dixon stepped up in the first game to give us a spark and the come from behind victory. We also had a lot of freshman who stepped up today and gave us a couple of big hits when we needed them the most. We were more composed at the plate and I was elated about that.”
 
 Yanez went 2-for-3 in game one with a RBI, and went 2-for-3 in the second game. Yanez went 5-for-9 in the weekend series with three RBI.
 
The weekend sweep gives the Lady Hornets a 6-27 overall record and a 5-4 SWAC record which moves the team into third place in the Southwestern Athletic Conference Eastern with two more divisional series left on the schedule.
 
Game 1 – Hornets 8, Lady Bulldogs 6: Alabama State started fast with a two-run first-inning and a one-run third-inning to tie the game up at 3-all.
 
In the sixth, Meagan Dixon led off inning with a solo home run to centerfield, making it a 6-4 ballgame. After a Makayla Webster walk, Kim Ross doubled to left center advancing Webster to third base. Yanez singled to center field scoring Webster from third and moving Ross over to third. Bailey Patt, Brittnei Price, and Brehanna Rodrigues also singled in the inning to cap the 8-6 contest.
 
 Rodrigues went 3-for-4 with two runs scored and a RBI to lead the Lady Hornets at the plate. Destyni Valencia picked up her second win on the season going seven complete innings, giving up six runs and two walks, while striking out five.

Game 2 – Lady Hornets 6, Alabama A&M 5:
 
Alabama State got the bats going early today, scoring two runs in the first-inning and the second-inning to take a 4-3 lead over the Lady Bulldogs after four innings of work.
 
Stephanie Hernandez doubled to right center with one out to get the Lady Hornets started in the fifth inning, making it a 5-3 ballgame. Alabama A&M added two runs in the fifth to knot the game up at 5-all.    
 
In the sixth, Dixon tripled to right field with one out for ASU. Webster singled to right field scoring Dixon from third to the commanding 6-5 lead and ended the game.
 
“We still need to do a better job of taking care of the lead and the ball on defense,” said Hall. “We still have lots of work to do before the Alcorn series, but all-in-all, I am pleased with the outcome of this weekend's performance from the ladies and sweep of Alabama A&M.”
 
The Hornets return to action Tuesday, April 9 at Jacksonville State at 4 p.m. before hosting Alcorn State in a SWAC series next Friday and Saturday.
