MACON, Ga. – The Alabama State baseball team opened a five-game road trip with a 10-2 loss at Mercer Tuesday night at Claude Smith Field.
Trailing 4-0 after two innings, the Hornets (19-16) scored in the third on a trio of two-out hits.
Leo Rojas singled to right field, and moved to third on
Richard Gonzalez' single down the right field line.
Waldyvan Estrada, who went 3-for-4, singled to center to score Rojas to cut the margin to 4-1.
However, Mercer (26-10) scored twice in fourth and sixth innings, and added singled runs in the fifth and seventh innings to break the game open.
Alabama State scored its final run in the seventh on a RBI single by
Richard Amion, scoring
Emmanuel Marrero.
The Hornets had 10 hits but scored just twice, stranding at least one runner on base in eight of nine innings.
“We did a better job offensively, but we still left 12 runners on base,” head coach
Mervyl Melendez said. “We made too many stupid mistakes, and although the box score says earned runs, we had an error in the first inning that led to two runs, we make a strikeout but the hitter gets on base after a passed ball, and then an error at shortstop – that's five runs there that we allowed. Combine that with the runners left on base, and It was not a good sequence of events to equal a victory for us.”
The Hornets return to action Wednesday at Auburn, with first pitch at 6 p.m. The game can be heard live at bamastatesports.com/showcase.
